Douglas Laing rocks Schwetzingen Castle

Our Douglas Laing's Fellow, Dr. Heinz Weinberger from Whisky-Connaisseur, presented the extensive portfolio of Douglas Laing at the Whisky fair Whisky-Spring in Schwetzingen near Heidelberg, Germany. Here are his impressions...

From 14 to 16 February 2020, the northern halls of the baroque Castle of Schwetzingen near Heidelberg formed the magnificent backdrop for the sixth time for the only Whisky fair in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The organizing team of the Whisky-Spring was again able to gather renowned manufacturers, importers, independent bottlers as well as traders from the German-speaking countries and increasingly also from the region. A total of 42 exhibitors with more than 1,200 different Whisky bottlings presented an almost inexhaustible range of products to the visitors and left nothing to be desired. Especially the mild temperatures at the weekend attracted many spontaneous guests to the castle. Thus, with over 3,000 visitors, Whisky Spring exceeded all expectations and has established itself as a permanent institution in the region.

As Douglas Laing's Fellow, I presented for the second time the unique Single Malt Single Cask, Single Grain and Remarkable Regional Malts bottlings from Glasgow at my stand. I had a varied selection of a total of 38 different bottlings, including latest releases, both for tasting and for sale. In advance, I was provided with marketing material and various giveaways by Douglas Laing and the German importer Bremer Spirituosen Contor (BSC).

The following bottlings were particularly in demand:

  • Provenance Series

    Fettercairn 10yo Sherry Butt (DL13460)

A full-bodied, sweet sherried single malt with dried fruits, roasted almonds and spices, served with dark chocolate

  • Old Particular Series

    Glencadam 15yo Refill Barrel (DL13538)

A palate flatterer with brioche pastry, fine spices, tropical fruits, creamy honey and gentle oak cask influence

  • XOP - Xtra Old Particular Series

    Jura 21yo Refill Barrel (DL13518)

A complex and mouth-filling dram from the island of Jura with tropical fruits, dark toffee, fresh vanilla and a touch of sea salt

  • Remarkable Regional Malts (RRM)

    The Epicurean Côte Rôtie Finish

A vibrant dram with cocoa, creamy cereals and sweet autumnal fruits.

To many visitors this was an exceptional dram and much sought after!

  • Remarkable Regional Malts (RRM)

    Scallywag 13yo

An exuberant sweet and fruity dram in perfect balance with a rich spiciness - truly enjoyable and dangerously quaffable

  • Remarkable Regional Malts (RRM)

    Timorous Beastie 16yo Winter Edition

A rich and creamy blended malt, flavourful and balanced with dried fruits, warming Christmas spices and notes of chocolate

  • Remarkable Regional Malts (RRM)

    Big Peat 33yo

An elegant and wonderful aroma with creamy fruit notes, subtle smoke and peat flavours - the oldest Big Peat to be bottled to date!

Many visitors came to my stand. On Saturday the Whisky friends stood in rows of three in front of my bottlings. Some of the guests did not know much about Douglas Laing and its bottlings, but some of them were very well informed about the individual Remarkable Regional Malts. After enjoying one or the other dram of the RRM, Old Particular or XOP range, everyone was enthusiastic about the excellent quality of the whiskies. In my additional RRM-tasting I was able to completely convince the interested guests of the special features of the bottlings from the Remarkable Regional Malts series, such as Timorous Beastie 10yo, Scallywag 12yo Cask Strength, Rock Island 21yo and Big Peat Feis Ile 2019 Edition. Two participants were fascinated by the variety of flavours of the Rock Island Blended Malt, which showed itself in recurring waves of sweetness, smoke and saltiness, and which one could not expect from a single malt in such a way, as they said.

As at various trade fairs before, the visitors found the many give-aways that were to be found at my stand very desirable. This made me stand out from all the other exhibitors again. Especially the Big Peat sweatshirts, the RRM stickers, various tasting glasses, RRM pens and the numerous brochures were in great demand. At this point I would like to thank Douglas Laing and BSC once again for their great support. The next Whisky Spring will take place from 26 to 28 February 2021 at the same location. I will of course be there again with outstanding bottlings of Douglas Laing and will be flying the Douglas Laing flag.
