Family Whisky Makers Since 1948: The Douglas Laing Story

By Fred Laing Jnr

There is a certain honesty to Scotch Whisky, whether in a cask or in a bottle. It cannot be rushed, nor does it respond well to unnecessary interference. Over time, it reveals exactly what it is — shaped by the spirit, the cask and the judgement of those who choose to let it develop naturally, or those who go on to blend it.

That understanding has always sat at the heart of Douglas Laing.

Founded in Glasgow in 1948 by my father, Fred Douglas Laing (FDL), after whom I was named, the company was built on a simple belief: create whisky with quality and integrity in mind, then present it as naturally as possible. More than 75 years later, that belief still guides us — family owned, independent, and committed to managing our Scotch Whiskies in our own heartfelt and personal way.

From Blending Roots to a Whisky Hybrid

FDL began as a blender. Through instinct, curiosity and a willingness to learn, he developed a deeper appreciation for what each distillery could bring to his blending tableau. Across the decades he kept refining his ability to marry spirits together, while recognising the profound influence that oak and cask maturation had upon them.

Today, we have come full circle. We still work as blenders, though now mainly of 100% malt Scotch Whiskies; as independent bottlers; and, more recently, as distillers. That combination lets us explore Scotch Whisky — our lifeblood — from three different perspectives, while staying true to our origins.

Whether we are releasing personally selected Single Casks, creating our Remarkable Regional Malts, or distilling and vatting our own Strathearn Single Malt, that blending heritage remains central to everything we do. It is still all about the nose, the palate, the mouthfeel and the finish — distinctly individual qualities that FDL would recognise in an instant.

Three Generations, One Philosophy

Now in our third generation, we are still firmly in family hands. My daughter Cara — FDL’s granddaughter, and now my boss — is very much part of leading the business forward. That continuity gives us clarity and the freedom to think long term.

Without external pressures, we can make decisions based on quality and experience rather than short-term gain. Every release is still personally selected and approved by the family, and we stand by those decisions — guided by the same principles that have shaped Douglas Laing from the very beginning.

Independence

Independence is not simply a word for us. It defines how we work, and how we always have.

FDL began filling programmes with as many distilleries as possible back in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Many of these remain in place today — without any written contract, based on a handshake and eye contact — alongside the relationships we have built since. That foresight, and those associations, have allowed us to hold wide-ranging stocks of Malt and Grain Scotch Whiskies, some dating back to FDL’s own era.

As a result, we do not rely solely on the current marketplace to sustain us — something that sets Douglas Laing apart from many other independent bottlers. Those same stocks let us create six distinct Regional Malt brands, each reflecting the character of Scotland’s whisky-producing regions.

We select our single casks on merit, not simply because they are available. We develop our blends through taste, not formula. And when we believe in a whisky, we bottle it and stand by it. It is a straightforward approach, rooted in experience, judgement and a willingness to trust our instincts.

Respecting the Individuality of Whisky

Every cask matures differently. Over time it develops its own character, its own DNA, its own fingerprint — something we have always embraced.

Through our Single Cask bottlings, we celebrate those nuances and individual stories. Through our Regional Malts, we bring carefully selected casks together to create balanced expressions that capture the heart and soul of each whisky-producing region. Both approaches matter, and together they reflect the full spectrum of what Scotch Whisky can offer.

A Long-Term View

Scotch Whisky teaches patience, and we have always taken that long-term view. We continue to invest in the future while staying grounded in the principles that have guided us from the start: quality, integrity, and presenting Scotch Whisky as naturally as possible — no colouring, no chill filtration, no nonsense.

Innovation plays its part too. New product development has always been in our DNA, and we take pride in that spirit of creativity — but never at the expense of the foundations we have already built.

A Story Still Being Written

From a one-man blending house in Glasgow, working with just a handful of casks, to where we are today, Douglas Laing has grown while proudly staying true to FDL’s original vision. We remain a family business, guided by experience, independence and a commitment to letting our whiskies speak for themselves. In the end, the right way is rarely the fastest. But it is the one that lasts.
